ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth softball team and Deer Isle-Stonington baseball team highlighted an excellent day on the diamond for Hancock County squads with major upsets in Wednesday’s preliminary playoff games.
No. 13 Ellsworth (7-10) earned a 6-3 road win against fourth-ranked Hermon (13-4). The victory avenged the Eagles’ 15-3 loss to the Hawks on May 24.
Freshman Sara Shea had three hits for Ellsworth, and junior pitcher Mackenzie Chipman pitched a complete game with just one earned run allowed. The Eagles will play No. 5 Foxcroft (14-3) at 4 p.m. tomorrow, June 7.
In Class D North, the 10th-ranked Deer Isle-Stonington baseball team (5-12) upset No. 7 Greater Houlton Christian (11-4) 6-0 in Hodgdon. The Mariners will face No. 2 Bangor Christian (12-4) at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Husson University.
Both Mount Desert Island teams were in action in Class B North play Wednesday, and the No. 3 baseball team improved to 12-5 with an 8-2 win against No. 14 Caribou (4-13) in Bar Harbor. The Trojans will be back at home again tomorrowwhen they play sixth-seeded Gardiner (13-4) at 4 p.m.
In softball, one of the best seasons in recent years for the Trojans (9-8) came to an end with a road loss to No. 3 Oceanside (15-2). Lindsey McEachern delivered a great pitching performance for No. 14 MDI with 11 strikeouts and no walks allowed, but Chloe Jones pitched a shutout for Oceanside to send the Mariners to the quarterfinals.
Sumner’s softball season came to an end with a 16-0 road loss against No. 8 Dexter (9-8). The Tigers finished the season 7-10.
