BAR HARBOR — Tuesday was a tough day for local teams playing in the Class B North preliminaries as the Ellsworth softball team and both MDI diamond squads saw their seasons end in defeats.
MDI’s softball season came to an end Tuesday with a 4-2 home defeat against No. 9 Erskine Academy (10-7). The No. 8 Trojans (9-8) cut into a 4-0 deficit through five innings with a pair of runs in the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals.
Senior pitcher Lindsey McEachern struck out 15 batters and allowed just one walk for MDI in the circle. McEachern also had two hits at the plate for the Trojans, whose season ended in the prelims for the third consecutive year.
The fifth-ranked MDI baseball team was on the wrong side of a pitchers’ duel Tuesday evening as it fell 1-0 to 12th-ranked John Bapst (8-9) in Bar Harbor. The Trojans (8-9) ended their season on a four-game losing streak.
Elsewhere in the state, the No. 10 Ellsworth softball team’s season came to an end with a 7-0 road loss at No. 7 Gardiner (12-5). The Eagles (10-7) allowed two runs in the second inning, three in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Ellsworth baseball was not in action Tuesday as the Eagles had earned a bye to the Class B North quarterfinals as the No. 1 overall seed. Ellsworth (15-1) will host eighth-ranked Lawrence (8-9) at 2 p.m. today, June 5.
