ELLSWORTH — The first competitions are still more than a month away, but the Ellsworth football, soccer, volleyball, cross-country and golf teams know when and where they’ll play in 2019 after the school unveiled its fall sports schedule Friday.
Below is a list of Ellsworth’s games, matches and meets for the upcoming fall sports season, which will begin with the first day of practices Aug. 19. Times and dates for all events are subject to change.
Football
After seven years of 11-man football, Ellsworth/Sumner has switched to the eight-man version of the sport for the 2019 season. The Eagles are one of 10 teams participating in the new format, which was approved in April.
Eight-man football means a brand-new slate of opponents for Ellsworth/Sumner, which is scheduled to open its season at home Sept. 6. The Eagles play home-and-homes against Yarmouth and Gray-New Gloucester with other contests pitting them against Maranacook of Readfield, Mount Ararat of Topsham, Sacopee Valley of Hiram and Traip Academy of Kittery.

Boys’ soccer
A young Ellsworth boys’ soccer team finished strong in the second half of the season last year with wins over Hermon, Foxcroft and Mount Desert Island. With many of last year’s sophomores and juniors back for another go, the Eagles will look to build on that late-season success in 2019.
Ellsworth opens the season Sept. 7 against Caribou when it plays the second game of a doubleheader featuring both schools’ boys’ and girls’ teams. The Eagles host Presque Isle for Senior Night on. Oct. 9.

Girls’ soccer
Ellsworth’s girls’ soccer team won seven games in 2018 to clinch the Class B North playoffs for the first time in five years. The Eagles will have high hopes once again this time around with the bulk of last year’s roster returning.
The Ellsworth girls will play the same home-and-away schedule as the boys’ team, though most matchups are slated for different days. Senior Night for the girls’ team is scheduled for Oct. 8 against Presque Isle.

Volleyball
Ellsworth used a late-season surge last year to qualify for the Class B volleyball playoffs as the No. 9 seed. The Eagles are scheduled to open the 2019 season at home against Nokomis on Sept. 5.

Cross-country
The Ellsworth girls’ cross-country team brought home its first state championship in 40 years last season with a first-place finish at the Class B meet in Belfast. The Eagles also enjoyed a strong campaign on the boys’ side, placing third at regionals and seventh at states.
With seven girls and eight boys back from last year’s squads and a big crop of freshman incoming, Ellsworth is poised for a solid year again in 2019. The Eagles will open the season on their home course when they host the Ellsworth Invitational on Sept. 7.

The golf team will be the first Ellsworth squad to start its 2019 season when it hosts Hermon on Aug. 28. The Eagles will play 12 regular season matches prior to the start of championship season in October.
