ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth competition cheer team earned a first-place finish Friday at the Big East championships in Caribou.
The competition, which was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, was instead held at 6 p.m. Friday. That time change came after a rapid temperature drop resulted in bad road conditions throughout the eastern and northern portions of the state.
Among the teams the Eagles beat for their first-place finish were defending Class B state state champion and perennial powerhouse Hermon, Caribou, Presque Isle and 2016 Class B state champion Old Town. Local rival Mount Desert Island also competed in the event, finishing third.
The Eagles will return to the floor this weekend for the Penobscot Valley Conference championships at Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln. That compeition is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20.
