Ellsworth baseball, softball teams roll to wins over GSA, Foxcroft, WA, Presque Isle

ELLSWORTH — With half of their regular season campaigns behind them, the Ellsworth baseball and softball teams are sitting pretty.

The Eagles improved to 7-0 in baseball and 6-1 in softball with victories over George Stevens Academy and Foxcroft last week and three wins in two days Monday and Tuesday. Few games were close during that span, in which the two Ellsworth teams combined to outscore opponents 122-11.

The baseball team posted a pair of 11-1 wins over GSA and Foxcroft last week before earning three days of rest Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Eagles then beat Washington Academy 15-0 on Monday before beating Presque Isle (1-5) 10-0 and 6-0 in a doubleheader Tuesday.

Conner Wagstaff improved to 3-0 on the season with wins against GSA (10 strikeouts, three walks one earned run and one hit allowed) and in Game 1 against Presque Isle (14 strikeouts, one walk and one hit allowed). Jackson Curtis earned wins against Foxcroft and in Game 2 against Presque Isle, and Matt Burnett earned the win against Washington Academy.

In softball, Ellsworth followed a 16-0 win over GSA last Wednesday with a 7-3 win over previously unbeaten Foxcroft a day later. The Eagles then thumped Washington Academy 21-0 on Monday before sweeping Presque Isle 13-1 and 12-5.

After winning her first two varsity starts aganst GSA and Foxcroft, freshman Tyler Hellum tossed a no-hitter Monday against Washington Academy. Hellum made it four wins in as many games in Game 1 against Presque Isle before sophomore Sara Shea homered to highlight the Game 2 victory over the Wildcats (2-4).

Both Ellsworth teams are scheduled to face Belfast at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in Waldo County. The Eagles will then host Mount Desert Island at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 13.
