ELLSWORTH — Three local high school athletes were among the honorees at Wednesday’s Down East Family YMCA awards dinner at the Moore Community Center.

Katelynn Bagley and Austin Baron of Ellsworth High School and Ava Sealander of George Stevens Academy were named Teddy Saunders Award recipients. Each of the three students was deemed “a well-rounded athlete who exhibits exceptional sportsmanship, leadership qualities and role-model characteristics.”

Bagley, a senior, has competed on the cross-country, basketball and softball teams during her time at Ellsworth. Baron, also a senior, plays on the school’s baseball team and also participated on the swim team. Sealander was named Penobscot Valley Conference Swimmer of the Year in 2017 and became the school’s first state swim champion when she won the 200-yard individual medley title at the Class B championships in February.

Other award recipients were Joe Domagala, DEFY’s outgoing board chairman, as well as board members Jeff Buzzell and Stephen Fay, who are finishing their terms on the board of directors.

The Maralyn “Pete” Turnbull Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Cynthia Cullinane, who has been involved with DEFY for 20 years as the mother of three DEFY Dolphins swimmers. Townsquare Media Director of Sports Programming Chris Popper received the Service to Youth Award for his work covering local sports at WDEA.
