BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island’s Tia Tardy, one of the state’s top runners, signed a National Letter of Intent Thursday to run for Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.
Tardy has been a standout athlete in both track and cross-country in recent years. She won numerous individual races throughout the year, which she capped off by setting a course record at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships in Orono with a time of 18 minutes, 58 seconds. She also won the girls’ Class B North title in Belfast and finished second at the state championship meet Nov. 5.
On the track, Tardy set the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League record last year when she completed a mile run in 4:55 as an Orono High School junior. She had previously attended Mattanawcook Academy her freshman and sophomore years before transferring to Orono and then MDI.
Although signed to compete for the track team, Tardy also hopes to run cross-country at Bucknell. She plans on studying music and biology during her time at the university.
