Baseball teams hit the ground running in season’s second half

ELLSWORTH — High school baseball has moved at a fastball pitch — particularly for teams in Hancock County — as area squads have hit the ground running for the second half of the regular season.

As of Monday, May 16, for county teams, Ellsworth and Bucksport sat atop their regions as the Eagles were 9-1 in Class B North and Golden Bucks 10-1 in Class C North.

Mount Desert Island also sported a 5-4 record, while George Stevens Academy was 3-7 and Sumner 2-8.

The following is a recap of reported results:

Ellsworth 5, John Bapst 1

At Bangor May 16, the Eagles continued to soar at the top of the Class B North ranks after a four-run win over the Crusaders of Bangor. Ellsworth scored one run in the second inning, three in the fifth and one in the seventh, while John Bapst plated its lone run in the fourth.

Ellsworth’s offense was paced by Hunter Curtis (run), Kyle Kenny (run), Peter Keblinsky (single, 3 RBIs), Craig Burnett (RBI), Michael Palmer (double, run), Miles Palmer (2 singles, RBI) and Brady Kenny (single, 2 runs).

For John Bapst, Allan Wheaton (single, run, stolen base) and Jack Mason (run, stolen base) paced the offense.

Burnett tossed a gem on the hill for the visitors as he allowed one hit and two walks, with six strikeouts. Caleb Robbins and Wheaton combined to allow five hits and three walks, with two strikeouts for the Crusaders.

George Stevens Academy 2, Washington Academy 1

At Machias May 16, the Eagles held the Raiders off the scoreboard for the final three innings and emerged with a one-run victory.

GSA was led at the plate by Sol Lorio (single, run), Brady Pert (run), Harrison Walden (double), Will McArthur (double) and Bretton Lebel (single).

For WA, Brian Dennison (single, 3 stolen bases), Gavin Bixler (2 singles), Caden Schwinn (run, steal), Tristan Hicks (single) and Mike Taylor (single) paced the offense.

Teague Smallidge pitched for the Eagles and allowed five hits and one walk, with three strikeouts. Dennison toed the slab for the Raiders and allowed four hits and one walk, with six strikeouts.

Bucksport 10, Central 0 (6 inns.)

At Bucksport May 16, the Golden Bucks benefited from a six-run second inning and galloped past the Red Devils en route to a win by mercy rule. Bucksport added single runs in the first and fifth innings and walked off with the win with a two-run sixth.

The Golden Bucks were led at the plate by Tyler Hallett (hit, RBI, 2 runs), Gavin Holyoke (hit, run, 3 RBIs), Jake Guty (hit), Ty Giberson (2 hits, RBI, run), Brandon Elden (2 runs), Cam Rich (run, RBI), Ayden Maguire (2 hits, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Jason Terrill (hit, RBI), and Kaleb Nightingale (run).

Ben Speed rapped the lone hit for the Red Devils.

Guty and Giberson worked the hill for Bucksport and combined on a one-hit shutout. The duo walked two and struck out 12 in the win. Makiah Bryant and Jakson Pollock pitched for Central and scattered eight hits and seven walks, with one strikeout.

Mount Desert Island 10, George Stevens Academy 9

At Bar Harbor May 14, the Trojans pushed across the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh frame and walked off with a thrilling win over the Eagles. MDI scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the sixth and two in the seventh, while GSA plated three in the first, five in the second and one in the sixth.

The Trojans were buoyed at the plate by A.J. Lozano (hit, run), Quintin Pileggi (2 hits, run, 3 RBIs), Logan Blanchette (2 runs), Joey Wellman-Clouse (2 hits, 2 runs, 3 RBIs), Jay Haney (hit, 2 RBIs), Nick Jacobs (RBI), Jacob Shields (hit, run), Noah Keeley (hit, 2 runs) and Cal Hodgdon (hit, run).

For the Eagles, Sol Lorio (3 runs, RBI), Brady Pert (4 hits, RBI, 2 runs), Harrison Walden (hit, run, 2 RBIs), Isaiah Radel (RBI), Haven Smith (2 hits, 2 RBIs), Teague Smallidge (run), Aiden Sullivan (run) and Aubrey King (hit, run) paced the offense.

Haney and Keeley pitched for MDI and allowed eight hits and seven walks, with 11 strikeouts. Lorio and Pert pitched for GSA and scattered nine hits and four walks, with nine strikeouts.

Trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh, Shields led off with a single and stole second base ahead of a walk to Keeley, which put two runners aboard. After the next two batters were retired, Pileggi worked the count full and hit a line drive down the first-base line that plated the tying and winning runs.

Mount Desert Island 3, John Bapst 0

At Bar Harbor May 13, the Trojans took advantage of five Crusader errors, plated a pair of runs in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fifth to dispatch the visitors.

Quintin Pileggi (hit, 2 runs, RBI), Logan Blanchette (hit, RBI), Nick Jacobs (hit), Noah Keeley (hit, run) and Cal Hodgdon (hit) paced the MDI offense.

Pileggi also went the distance on the hill for the hosts as he allowed two hits and one walk, with 14 strikeouts. Jack Mason pitched for John Bapst and allowed four hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.

Ellsworth 7, Brewer 0

At Ellsworth May 12, the Eagles avenged their loss to the Witches the previous day with a shutout home victory. Ellsworth scored one run in the second inning, four in the fourth and one in the fifth and sixth.

Hunter Curtis (single, run, stolen base), Brett Bragdon (single), Peter Keblinsky (RBI), David Baugh (2 singles, run, RBI), Michael Palmer (single, 2 runs, steal), Dan Howie (double, single), Brayden King (run) and Miles Palmer (2 singles, run, RBI) led the Eagles at the dish, while the Witches were paced by Anderson Clifford (single), Rowan Valley (single) and Ethan Norwood (single).

Baugh went the distance on the bump for Ellsworth and tossed a three-hit shutout, as he yielded one walk to go with four strikeouts. Jed Gilpatrick, Maddox Torrey and Logan Levensalor pitched for Brewer and scattered nine hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.

Brewer 5, Ellsworth 3

At Bangor May 11, the Witches plated their runs in the first inning, which proved enough to outlast the visiting Eagles, who flew to single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh frames.

Ellsworth’s offense was led by Brett Bragdon (single, run), David Baugh (double, RBI), Hunter Curtis (single, run), Craig Burnett (triple, double, run, RBI) and Dan Howie (single, RBI).

For Brewer, Jed Gilpatrick (single, run), Grady Vanidestine (single), Rowan Valley (double, run), Logan Levensalor (single, run), Noah Tibbetts (single, run), Andrew Hodgkins (single, run) and Ethan Norwood (2 singles) keyed the offense.

Vanidestine pitched for the Witches and allowed six hits and two walks, with nine strikeouts. Burnett pitched for the Eagles and allowed eight hits and no walks, with five strikeouts.

Bucksport 9, Mount Desert Island 0

At Bucksport May 11, the Golden Bucks held the Trojans to two hits and swung to a shutout victory. Bucksport scored three runs in the first inning, one in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Ty Giberson pitched for the Golden Bucks and tossed a two-hit shutout, as he yielded no walks and struck out 10 in a top-notch effort on the hill for the hosts. A.J. Lozano, Noah Keeley and Logan Blanchette pitched for MDI and scattered a combined 12 hits and four walks, with five strikeouts.

Bucksport was paced at the plate by Tyler Hallett (2 doubles, single, 2 runs, stolen base), Gavyn Holyoke (2 singles, run, steal), Jake Guty (3 singles, 2 runs, steal), Ty Giberson (single, steal), Brandon Elden (single, steal), Gunther Cyr (single, run), Jason Terrill (single, run, steal) and Kaleb Nightingale (run).

Brendan Graves and A.J. Lozano singled for MDI.
