Elected Amherst’s first selectman in September 2018, Wes Ellington moved to Eastport from his native Texas as a teenager when a job transfer brought his father to Maine. After graduating from Shead High School, Ellington “went back to Texas for five years or so.”

While at Shead, he had dated an Eastport girl named Vanessa. Reconnecting a few years later, they dated long distance until Ellington transferred to Maine about 12 years ago. Initially employed as a pipeliner by Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline, he lived in Richmond for two years.

Wes and Vanessa married in May 2008. Now assigned to station operation, he worked at a compression station on the Stud Mill Road. Vanessa searched for a house and found one in Amherst, and the Ellingtons moved there in March 2009. “This was natural for me,” Wes said. “It felt right. I did not want to live in town. It’s beautiful out here.”

Now a planner-scheduler, he travels to wherever needed along the M&NP natural gas pipeline running from Baileyville to Dracut, Mass. He, Vanessa and their 7-year-old-son Mason “are very outdoorsy people” interested in hiking, fishing and camping.

Vanessa and Mason have taken up golf with Wes, an avid golfer from years past. As for Mason, “he’s into it,” Wes said.

The family also likes to “spend a lot of time with our friends and neighbors here,” he said. “This small town is different pretty much from any place I’ve ever been,” with neighbors looking after one another.

Mason has developed close friendships at Airline Community School and also with Amherst neighbors.

“Everybody that takes the time with him invests in him,” his father said. “We realized a long time ago how great a town this is.”
