Adenovirus-based vaccine technology has been around for many decades. It is well understood, and has an excellent record of safety and efficacy.
Right now, the FDA is dragging its heels, refusing to approve adenovirus-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccines for use in the United States. Those vaccines have been approved by many governments around the world and are now being used in countries as varied as the United Kingdom, Russia, Argentina and India, to name only a few.
At a time when Americans are facing a steep rise in COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations and deaths, we need every tool in the box to achieve herd immunity. It is irresponsible, on the most profound level, for the FDA to hold back approval for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine and others like it.
Right now, the supply of the mNRA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) is inadequate, and the pace of inoculation is too slow.
As citizens, we have a right to know why the FDA has gone into limp mode, when it comes to approval of adenovirus-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.
The stakes are high. It is a matter of life and death.
I am calling out the state and federal CDC and the FDA. You owe us a full and frank explanation of your failure to act on our behalf. I am asking every citizen who shares my concerns to speak up. Only when many voices are raised does a bureaucracy heave itself out of its rut and begin to move.
We need those vaccines. Approve them now and begin to distribute them.
Time wasted results in illness, suffering and death.
