Trump’s legacy

Dear Editor:

When Trump left the White House, his legacy left America with a host of problems, most of which were the result of his true intention: his intention to destroy our democracy. In fact, it has become clear that this was his plan all along: to govern as a dictator would.

In his vision, his political enemies would receive jail sentences. Remember his oft-repeated phrase against Hilary Clinton? Lock her up? His intentions were to continue in office no matter what obstacles might stand in his way, especially a national election that gave the victory to Biden. Thus began the big lie of a stolen election, which the hardcore right-wing Republicans are still endlessly broadcasting.

When Trump stood up and referred to the neo-Nazis marching in Charlottesville as “fine people,” the world could see what his intentions were. Never mind that Hitler had murdered 6 million Jews in WWII, Trump made it clear that he agreed with the torch-bearing gang of thugs. This encouragement helped to lay the groundwork for the march on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. And Trump’s preference for the “Second Amendment people” (the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys, for example) has encouraged the increased gun sales and mass shootings across the country. Where will you be when the next attack takes place?

The determination to remain in office was clearly evident in the well-planned march on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Warnings that there would be violence did not deter Trump and his followers from proceeding to push the march to its devastating conclusion. His attempt to have VP Mike Pence discredit the electoral vote and turn the presidency over to Trump backfired, so storming the Capitol might be his only opportunity to prevent the counting of the electoral votes. Trump had already failed to convince attorneys general in three states to throw out their electoral votes and somehow produce electoral votes that favored himself.

We citizens have the dubious honor of watching Republicans in the House and Senate continue to allow Trump to hold them in his sway. Citizens of America, you had best pull out your history books and strive to prevent a Nazi government in America. Get ready to cast the most important vote of your life in spite of Republican attempts to severely limit this most sacred freedom. Get ready to outvote the would-be dictators.
