The tourists are coming! The tourists are coming!

Memorial Day weekend kicks off the Maine tourist season, that special time of year when businesses begin operating in the black and drivers start seeing red.

The lobster-hungry hordes fill roadways, parking lots and the quick checkout line. An errand that would take 15 minutes in March can easily turn into an hour-long expedition in July.

Year-round residents grumble, but most readily acknowledge the importance of tourism to the local economy.

Yogic breathing also helps. Try it the next time you’re cut off on Myrick Street.

It never hurts to remember that the things that make Downeast Maine a great place to visit are some of the same things that make it a great place to live – sweeping coastline, vast public lands, fresh seafood, friendly people, a rich arts scene.

Better to live some place people actually want to go.
