Maine’s health care champion

Dear Editor:

We support Sara Gideon to be our senator.

There are many reasons to do so, but as health care providers, we pay particular attention to a candidate’s position regarding your health care. In that respect, there is no contest. Sara has a record of success in Maine that we need repeated in Washington.

As speaker of the Maine House, Sara has demonstrated her commitment to access to quality health care for all. As the fate of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) hangs in the balance, Sara worked to pass legislation that writes key protections of the ACA into Maine law. Those protections include prohibitions on insurance companies charging seniors substantially higher rates, bans lifetime and annual caps on coverage, requires coverage for 10 essential health needs, including ambulance services, prescription drugs and pediatric care, and preserves the ability of parents to keep children on their insurance up to age 26.

She also led the passage of legislation to cap out-of-pocket insulin costs at $35 per month, which affects 140,000 Mainers. And legislation to prevent surprise billing from out-of-network providers when the patient had no ability to choose a cheaper option.

Sara championed expanding access to health care for more than 60,000 Mainers, leveraging available federal dollars to do so. That was vital also for the health of small hospitals which annually incur millions of dollars of losses for necessary, but uncompensated care.

Sara realizes how disastrous the federal response to COVID-19 has been. She is committed to a rapid, rational and effective mobilization of resources to address that problem. She knows that we will not recover economically until we have this virus under control.

Electing Sara is also essential to remove Mitch McConnell from control of the Senate. Nothing positive for the people of Maine will happen on health care, economic fairness, environmental health, social or racial equity or a host of other matters that affect our everyday lives as long as he controls the Senate. A vote for Susan Collins is a vote for McConnell’s leadership.

Please join us in voting for Sara Gideon to be our senator.
