I’m sure I’m not the only person who doesn’t have to think for a second when asked who their favorite teacher of all time is.
I’m also sure I’m not the only person who immediately names Steve Lane.
I had Steve Lane as a teacher in the Sullivan Grammar School and moved with him for the inaugural year of Mountain View Middle School. He was the reason I can say I was in the first graduating class of that school.
I believe Steve Lane understood attention deficit disorder long before it was ever officially diagnosed. I can tell you, I was wired for sound!
He knew all I wanted to do was play ball, any sort of ball, so he made it clear to me that if I stayed focused in classes, did my homework and passed my tests, he’d play ball with me. And he followed through. We played a lot of ball! I look back on it, all these years later, and I think: Genius!
I saw Steve at a couple of fundraisers over the years, but I’ll never feel like I thanked him enough for all he did for me. I’m so sad he’s gone.
So, those of you who know who your favorite teacher of all time is, if you can, make some time to track them down and thank them for all they did. You’ll feel better for it!
Thank you, Mr. Lane!
