Social media’s downside

Dear Editor:

I am writing to express my opinions and concerns about using social media and my privacy on it. Media is an excellent tool for our society. It can connect the world in a way that was unimaginable 100 years ago. It brings together different cultures at a speed where we can have almost instant updates from around the globe. With that being said, there are some significant concerns with media.

One major flaw is around ethics, and what information is or is not appropriate to be shared. Facebook is one of the most popular websites that people use on the internet, with over 2.45 billion monthly users. People use this platform to post updates in their lives that other people can see. There are some small issues with this, such as people can see when you are on vacation and may give robbers an opportune time to break into your home. On the macro scale, Facebook has had issues with hackers stealing user’s personal information, like Social Security numbers. Facebook users’ data was recently released to a private political firm. Fifty million accounts were affected, and this created theories around a possible unfair election.

I am concerned about the security of my information on Facebook, especially since I run my business on Facebook. If my information was exposed, all my information about my company would be at risk. This is a lot more difficult to fix than just a personal account. I do my best to monitor all accounts that follow and engage with my account but still worry about my security.
