Dear Editor:
I am 11 years old, and I volunteer weekly at the Ellsworth Historical Society, as part of my homeschooling studies. I would like to see the historic old jail in the center of town preserved, because it represents a key part of Ellsworth’s and Hancock County’s history. It is a rare example of a joint sheriff’s home and jail facility, and is a significant part of the historical landscape, along with the library and courthouse being right in downtown. The old jail offers a historical learning experience. The cell block appeals to people of all ages.
I would like to see our town make preserving this building a high priority, because once it is gone, it can never be replaced.
