Maine needs Betsy Sweet

Dear Editor:

Maine needs a leader like Betsy Sweet, especially in the current moment.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began, over 38 million workers have been forced to file for unemployment benefits. Many of these people also lost their employer-based health insurance. That’s in addition to the 27 million Americans who were already uninsured beforehand.

This is the worst pandemic in a century. In the United States, the richest country in the history of the world, millions of our fellow citizens do not have health insurance. The $2-trillion coronavirus bailout overwhelmingly benefited large corporations at the expense of struggling American workers.

Betsy Sweet, a candidate for U.S. Senate, understands the reason why our elected officials are so reluctant to change a clearly unjust status quo. She understands our political system has been overrun by special-interest money that increasingly affects the decision-making process of both Democratic and Republican politicians.

That’s why, instead of returning to business as usual, I am excited to support a political outsider with a bold, unapologetic vision about what she stands for. With ranked choice voting, there are no “spoilers” and no “I like X, but they can’t win.”

Betsy Sweet represents the change I want to see and that’s why I’m ranking her first on July 14.
