A great golf tourney means more children have an EPIC summer camp experience

Dear Editor:

The Y is for youth development, social responsibility and healthy living. These goals drive us each day. The Down East Family YMCA believes that every child in our community deserves to have a summer camp experience. The Bo Lewis Memorial Golf Tournament provides our Y with the financial resources to help children make memories that will last a lifetime.

Bo Lewis was an integral part of our capital campaign in 2010 which allowed our Y to purchase the Eastbrook site that is now Camp Discovery. Bo was a staple at our annual golf tournament until his passing in 2012. It was a natural and obvious decision to honor Bo’s commitment to our Y with our golf tournament beginning in 2013. The first four years were a great successes. Our Y raised $56,763 which allowed 190 children go to our camp (for a total of 950 camper weeks). These are children who would otherwise not have been able to attend.

Each year the tournament grows. In 2017, the tournament raised $23,500 with 144 golfers participating! Over 90 local businesses showed their support through sponsorships and donations. Thanks to the success of the tournament, we expect an additional 61 children (305 camper weeks) to enjoy our Y’s camp programs through scholarship assistance.

It is a great feeling to give children the opportunity to spend time with their peers in the Maine woods. Whether they are experiencing the fun and challenge of paddle boarding, doing arts and crafts, catching a fish or enjoying the camaraderie in the mess hall, our camps provide a safe, welcoming place for our children to grow and develop into healthy adults. This is possible because of the wonderful people who support the Bo Lewis Memorial Golf Tournament and our Y. It truly does take a village!

It’s for the kids.
