A pall on the nation

Dear Editor:

In his letter to the editor dated Oct. 15, Mr. Oliver T. Carr Jr. of Blue Hill contends that there exist “eerie parallels” between modern-day America and Germany of the 1930s and ’40s.

Apart from the malignant narcissists at the top (Mr. Carr forgot to mention them), what else? Those who would impose one-party rule? Perhaps Mr. Carr is referring to the party that denied confirmation hearings for a judge, nominated for the position of Supreme Court justice, by a duly elected Democratic president. Perhaps he is referring to the party that sits atop the executive branch, only to ignore lawful subpoenas from the House of Representatives. No. He must be referring to the one and only party remaining (Hint: It starts with a D). Republicans in the Congress, having devolved into some sort of invertebrate, haven’t been heard from for the last four years.

The party of leftist elites, Marxist socialists, and anarchists? Ah, yes! People like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice and Michael Brown. What elitists! People like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who would dare to say that people in the wealthiest country on Earth should earn a living wage and have a right to health care. Marxist indeed!

Oh, and the window smashers! Better that we should have “law and order.” Crack more necks and fewer windows. “When the looting starts, the shooting starts”; that’s the motto! The party unwilling to gracefully transfer power after an election? Clearly a reference to Al Gore when he conceded to George W. Bush by saying, “…now it (the election) has ended, resolved, as it must be resolved, through the honored institutions of our democracy.” Tasteless!

Government-controlled propaganda? Fox News! Misinformation? I think her name is Mainly Cockamamie, I mean, Kayleigh McEnany. Not the party his grandfather knew? Sad, isn’t it? The party of Lincoln and it’s withering descent from “…malice toward none…charity for all…” to “…very fine people on both sides.” From demigod to demagogue.

From martyr to manure. Don’t be fooled. Donald Trump doesn’t light a path for America. He has cast a pall over this nation. On Nov. 3, I hope Americans cast Donald and that pall of his in the dustpan of history.
