William L. Johnston, 67, died unexpectedly May 18, 2020, in Sorrento. He was born in Bar Harbor on Nov. 24, 1952, the son of James and Erma (Gatcomb) Johnston.
He graduated from Sumner High School and then was drafted into the U.S. Army. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, fishing, hunting, watching baseball and football. People often saw him coaching little league in Hancock. If he could not be found there, he would be on the golf course with his buddies and his bestie, Tom Brenton. Willy was a bloodworm digger for over 40 years and often joked how he could hold a rock down.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, James Johnston; sister, Mary Beth Amison; and grandson, Thomas Merchant. He is survived by sons, Jaimie Johnston and wife Stephanie Flood of Sullivan and Michael Johnston and wife Kelly of Gouldsboro; daughter, Kristy Johnston of Southwest Harbor; grandchildren, Michael McGraw, Leah McGraw and Keagan Johnston; brother, Peter Johnston and wife Dolores of Hancock; and by many other significant family that is too large to list. He will be sadly missed by his dear companion, Pam Coperthwaite of Sorrento, and Joyce and George Faella of Sorrento for whom he worked for over 45 years.
A service of remembrance will be set at a later date.
Gifts in Willy’s memory can be made to the Hancock Congregational Church, PO Box 443, Hancock ME 04640.
