William “Bill” Osgood Apthorp

CONCORD, MASS. — William “Bill” Osgood Apthorp was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Salem, Mass., and died Jan. 24, 2013, in Concord, Mass. His parents were Robert East Apthorp and Esther Williams Apthorp. After the family moved to Milton Mass., Bill and his brother, Jim, attended Milton Academy and Harvard College.

Bill served in WWII as first lieutenant in the Navy on the USS Alywin (DD355) in the Pacific, and then taught navigation at the ROTC program at Princeton University, where he also coached their ice hockey team until his discharge April 1946. He met his future wife, Elsie Ogden Janeway, while spring skiing on Mount Washington in 1946. They were married June 21, 1947. His fond memories of Christmas vacation with his cousins, the Thompsons of Fairhaven Hill, in Concord, led him to later build a home with Elsie in Concord. They raised their family near the Punkatasset ski hill and pond. In July 1946, he began working at Tucker Anthony Co. in Boston, where he was a partner until he retired in November 1986. Bill was most passionate about skiing and sailing. His first overnight skipper experience was sailing form Marblehead, Mass., to Maine when he was 15, and culminated with a trans-Atlantic sail in 1985. Bill was a long time member of the Cruising Club of America. He and Elsie cruised with family and friends in Norway, Greece, Italy, Turkey and most of all the coast of Maine. Eventually Bill fulfilled his retirement dream by building a house at the head of Somes Sound, where he moored his sailboat outside his window. He was an original member of the Drifters Ski Club in Jackson, N.H. In addition to taking many ski trips with family and friends out west and in Europe, Bill ski raced until he was 79 years old.

Bill leaves behind his wife, Elsie; his brother, James Apthorp, MD of California; his children, Robert East Apthorp, Bunny A. Goodwin, Nancy A. Barnhart, Helen S. Apthorp, Elinor A. Stapleton; his grandchildren, Owen Christopher Barnhart, Roger Laurence Barnhart, Morgan Janeway Goodwin, Robert Alton Goodwin, Liza Williams Goodwin, Alex Greenspan, Eli Greenspan, Meredith Apthorp Stapleton, Philip East Stapleton; one great-grandchild, Ryder Barnhart.

A memorial service will take place 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Newbury Court, Concord, Mass., followed by a reception also at Newbury Court. Friends wishing to remember Bill may make memorial contributions to the Sea Educational Association, http://www.sea.edu/support_sea.
