Sylvia Anne Tapley

ELLSWORTH — Our beloved sister and aunt, Sylvia Anne Tapley, died Feb. 15, 2014, at EMMC in Bangor, where she was born (EMGH) June 19, 1943, the second of four daughters of Lillian Sylvia (Drasler) and Paul Dutton Tapley.

Predeceased by her parents, Sylvia is survived and will be missed by her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Tapley Turner, Louise Edith Tapley-VanPelt and Jean Ellen Tapley; nieces and nephews, Robert and Lavay Turner; Christopher Turner; Gregory and Martha Turner and children, Bailey and Owen; Michael and Lindsey Turner and baby Olive; Wendy Turner and John Wert and daughter, Maya; Susan VanPelt; Benjamin VanPelt; also Betsy VanPelt and Tim Carens and children, Maddy and Ben; Molly VanPelt and son, Alex; Peter VanPelt and Brooke Balick; and many cousins and friends.

Sylvia spent her childhood in Ellsworth and “Rockhaven,” Trenton. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Ellsworth. A graduate of EHS (1961), she continued as class secretary beyond its 50th reunion. Also a UMO graduate, Class of 1965 (BA, sociology), she served as class correspondent. Sylvia led an active, independent life, despite physical challenges. She was a social worker and credit manager. During many years lived in Connecticut, she was active in church as deacon and Stephen Minister at First Church Congregational of Fairfield. As a community volunteer, she loved reading to Bridgeport schoolchildren, “walked & rolled” annually for CROP Walks for Hunger and was an officer in the NAMI of Fairfield. In 1994, Sylvia was honored by “Salute to Women” of the YWCA Eastern Fairfield County and in 2005 by her church in a Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Sylvia retired to a new home in her Ellsworth childhood neighborhood, where she loved seeing family and friends. She enjoyed puzzles, games and cards, especially with cousin Hank Vucetic. She read, traveled, gardened, maintained hobbies and collections and worked on family genealogy.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at First Congregational Church of Ellsworth.
