DEER ISLE—Sarah B. Drew, 90, passed away Monday, April 5, 2010, at Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle. Sarah was born in Bath in 1920, the daughter of the late Forest L. Barter and Mildred (Nightingale) Adams and stepfather, Leon C. Adams.
While growing up on a farm in Benton, she attended Benton Elementary School, graduated from Clinton High School in 1937 and also attended the University of Maine at Orono. In 1949, she graduated from Peter Bent Brigham Hospital Nursing School in Boston. For over 20 years Sarah was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She retired from Mid Maine Medical Center – Thayer and Seton in Waterville in the 1980s. She was an active member of the Laurel Rebekah Lodge No. 66 in Clinton, where she was a Past Noble Grand and Acme Rebekah Lodge No. 75 in Oakland. She was also a member of the Sebasticook Grange in Clinton and a former past president of the American Legion Auxiliary-Willett-McKenney Unit No. 186 in Clinton. Sarah was baptized and became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ellsworth in 2003. She enjoyed the fellowship she found with her new church family. Among many things, Sarah enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing. Being an avid newspaper reader and television watcher, many topics came up for discussion. History and politics were among her favorites. She was extremely good at trivia questions. She enjoyed traveling and talking about the many things she had seen along the way. And most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
She was predeceased by her brother, John Q. Adams; and sister-in-law, Effie Adams. Sarah is survived by her brothers, Arthur Adams of Bear, Del., Leon Adams and wife, Jean, of Benton; her children, Judith Pescinski and husband, Frank, of Hill, N.H., Susan Kinzie of Loveland, Colo. Sarah Marie Weeks and husband, Gene, of Ashburnham, Mass., David Drew and wife, Ellen, of Penobscot; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, with a memorial service to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Greenlawn Rest Cemetery, Clinton.
