TREMONT — Phyllis “Tillie” Lorraine Hamblen Carter, 70, of Bass Harbor, died July 15, 2011 in Bar Harbor of natural causes. Born June 14, 1941 to Levi and Gladys (Norwood) Hamblen of Bass Harbor, she was a 1959 graduate of Pemetic High School.
In 1967 she married the love of her life, Clyde F. Carter, and together they raised their three daughters, Roseada, Michelle, and Kari.
Tillie was always busy; her love of sewing, cooking, gardening, and going out clamming the guys are among the many things she will be remembered for. She also loved reminiscing about her early years, and old friends. Most summers were spent at camp on George’s Pond with family and close friends, and many happy memories were made there.
She also made many lifelong friends through her and Clyde’s years of involvement with the Coastal Antiques Car Club, which they both loved.
Her starring role was perhaps as “Gramma” which she did wonderfully with her six grandchildren, and then her three great-grandchildren, as well as some others along the way.
She is survived by her daughters: Roseada (Rumill) Peterson and husband Keith, Michelle Carter, and Kari (Carter) Seavey and husband Austin, all of Seal Cove, as well as her “adopted daughters” Tina (Strout) Lawson and husband Wesley of Southwest Harbor, and Barbara (Strout) Morse and husband Norman of Hancock; grandchildren Mike Conners of Bernard, Christy Rumill of Seal Cove, Brittany Carter of Trenton, Adrienne Carter of Ellsworth, Kenneth and Nikita Seavey of Seal Cove, as well as “adopted granddaughter” Alaina Brown of Trenton; great-grandchildren Chase, Izak, Summer, Maddie, and Preslee; brothers Robert Hamblen and wife Carol of Southwest Harbor, Herbert Hamblen and wife Barbara of Warren; sisters Pat Durkee and husband Manford of Spruce Head, and Rosalie “Dolly” Stanley of Bar Harbor; as well as many special nieces and nephews; and very special friend Phyllis Bennett of Bass Harbor.
She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Clyde F. Carter, in October of 2008; and by two sisters, Donna Smith and Francis “Whitey” Loring; as well as a special brother-in-law Charles Stanley.
Contributions to assist the family may be sent to Kari Seavey, 917 Tremont Road, Seal Cove ME 04674
Memorial services are to be announced at a later date.
