Philomena M. Thomas

BAR HARBOR — Philomena M. Thomas died Nov. 6, 2013, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born Dec. 23, 1922, in Kansas City, Mo., a daughter of Frank and Ruby (Murphy) Swope.

She married Emory Van Compernolle in 1941 and they had four daughters. After Emory died at the age of 45, she went to work for the Kansas City Post Office and worked there until retirement. She had married Orville Thomas in 1967. After his death in 1993, she remained in Missouri until 2000, when she moved to Bar Harbor to be near two of her daughters. Philomena enjoyed her favorite food, ice cream, and also many types of music and mystery novels. She was a warm and generous person who loved her family and enjoyed being with them whenever she could. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish in Bar Harbor. The last several years she was a resident of Sonogee Living Center, where she was cared for by a kind and caring staff.

She is survived by daughters, Patricia Morrison and husband, David, of Bar Harbor; Phyllis VanCompernolle of Ellsworth; Barbara VanCompernolle of Ohio; and Shirley Bridge of Colorado; five grandchildren, Michelle Morrison and husband, Tim Ellis, Catherine Morrison and her husband, Jose Querido, Joseph Morrison and wife, Joy, Megan Ferrier and husband, Scott, and Blake Bridge; three great-granddaughters, Zoe Querido, and Shayla and Kira Morrison.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Nov 11, 2013, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Bar Harbor. Burial followed at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Bar Harbor. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sonogee Activities Fund, 131 Eden St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
