Persis “Pop” Goodwin Ray, age 90, of Ellsworth, passed peacefully on September 11, 2020 at her home, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Pop was born in Bar Harbor on February 2, 1930 to the late Percy and Elizabeth (Bunker) Goodwin. She met her greatest love, Bobby Ray, after evacuating her childhood home in Hulls Cove during the Bar Harbor Fire of 1947. Pop and Bobby were married on October 17, 1948. She spent the next 25 years at home raising their children and helping run the family business, Ray Builders. She then went back to school to become a CNA and worked at MDI Hospital and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital as a CNA and ward secretary. She also volunteered at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for many years in her retirement.
Pop was very active throughout her life. She played tennis; competing at the national level, and golf; winning a championship at Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor. She was an avid bridge player and loved her “Bridgey Girls.”
As the matriarch of our family, Pop hosted annual Ray family 4th of July breakfasts and open house at Christmas. Pop marked important family milestones with a handmade quilted creation. Her quilts are among her family’s most treasured gifts.
Pop is survived by her children, Elizabeth Ehrlenbach and her husband Fred, Brenda Thomas and her husband Jesse, Amy Archer and her husband Brian, Robbie Ray and his wife Donna, a primary care provider in Pop’s final weeks, and fourteen grandchildren, collectively known as “the Ray Grands.” She is lovingly called “Grandma-great” by 18 “great-grands.” She is predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Robert A. Ray, Sr, her great granddaughter, Kinsley Ray Archer and her sisters Alberta Buck, Patricia Manzo and Martha Norwood.
The family extends sincere gratitude to Danielle and Allie from Northern Light Hospice for their exceptional care during Pop’s final weeks. A private graveside service will be held at Remick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Pop’s memory may be made to SPCA of Hancock County 141 Bar Harbor Road Trenton, Maine 04605.
