Patricia Clapp Gray

BLUE HILL — Patricia Clapp Gray, 77, passed away peacefully March 14, 2014, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor. Born June 29, 1936, to Gertrude and Mark Clapp at Blue Hill Hospital, she was raised in Sedgwick and Blue Hill.

After graduating from George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Patty attended UMO, where she earned a degree in zoology pre-med. She worked as a lab tech in Delaware for DuPont from 1958 to 1961. She then returned to Blue Hill, where she worked in the lab at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital from 1961 until she retired at age 65. During her career she returned to school and completed a one-year medical technical internship at EMMC. She enjoyed her work and found it hard to leave, so she worked per diem until 2007. Patty served on the board of trustees of George Stevens Academy. She sang in the choir at the Blue Hill Baptist Church and with the Bagaduce Chorale. She volunteered at the Turn Style in Blue Hill and with Faith in Action. Patty loved her friends and enjoyed playing bridge, and outings with The Red Hats and her walking group. After raising her family on Union Street in Blue Hill she and Donald moved to the Salt Pond, where Patty enjoyed the water and wildlife, especially the eagles. She was a very kind and fun person who touched the lives of many and left the world a better place. She said, “When I die, I don’t care what you write, but do not put my picture in the paper!” and she meant it.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Donald E. Gray, and their four sons, Tom and his wife, Sharon, and their daughter, Tiffany; Bill; John and his wife, Nicole; and Jim and his wife, Cat, and her daughter, Hannah. Patty was the first-born of five children and is survived by her brothers and sisters, John, Peter, Ruth and Joan, and their families. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law, Robert Gray, and his children and their families. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Duane, and leaves behind his family. She loved her family well and will be sadly missed by them.
