Nan (Conrad) Flaherty

Nan (Conrad) Flaherty, 93, a resident of Gouldsboro and formerly of Providence Place, Chambersburg, Pa., and East Madison Street, Greencastle, Pa., died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth. Born July 25, 1915, in Greencastle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late J.T. and Olive (Palmer) Conrad.

She was a schoolteacher in the Greencastle-Antrim School District for 35 years retiring in 1974. Mrs. Flaherty was a 1933 graduate of Greencastle High School and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Shippensburg University. She was an 80-year member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church where she sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and was a member of the Presbyterian Women. She was a 50-year member of the Franklin County Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter, board member of the Antrim-Allison Museum of Greencastle, member of the Greencastle Loyal Daughters and is the last charter member of the Greencastle Senior Women’s Club, having joined in 1938. She sang with the Arion Choristers of Hagerstown, Md., and coached girls’ hockey. She enjoyed music, knitting and cooking. After retiring in 1974, she would spend her summers in Gouldsboro. While in Maine she attended the Ashville Community Church in Sullivan.

Her husband, Charles E. Flaherty, died in 1983. Surviving family are one son, Charles M. (husband of Barbara) Flaherty of Maine; two grandchildren, Erin and Marla; three great-grandchildren, Isabella, Sophia and Caleb; one sister, Jane Alexander, resident of ManorCare Health Services of Chambersburg, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, William P. Conrad, John T. Conrad Jr., Joseph F. Conrad; and a sister, Sue Poper.

A memorial service will be held later this fall in the Greencastle Presbyterian Church with time and date to be announced. Interment will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle, Pa., at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be given in her memory to the Ashville Community Church, P.O.
