N. Theresa Black



BAR HARBOR—N. Theresa Black, 75, died May 18, 2010, surrounded by her family at Mount Desert Island Hospital after battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for eight years. She was born Nov. 18, 1934, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Charles and Marguerite (Ober) Paine.

 

Theresa owned and operated Jordan’s Variety in Bar Harbor for many years. She also worked at The Jackson Laboratory for 28 years, where she retired as a supervisor. While working at the Lab, Theresa continued her education by obtaining her GED diploma from Pacific High School. She also earned a certificate for Interpersonal Communication Skills from Eastern Maine Technical College as well as a certificate for attending the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science for Self-Esteem and Peak Performance. She sponsored a child in Ecuador for the past 15 years and has arranged for her support to be continued. She was also an active member of the May Flower Society. Theresa was an avid Red Sox fan. She enjoyed spending time with her friends at Harbor Hill Estates. She loved knitting, watching game shows, reading Danielle Steele novels and doing puzzles. She especially enjoyed the winters she spent in Ft. Myers, Fla., and summers at “camp” on Flander’s Pond.

Theresa is survived by her partner, Robert MacLeod; sons, Robert (Robin) MacLeod Jr. and wife, Suzanne, of Ellsworth and Richard Black II of Long Island, N.Y.; daughters, Melodie Haskell and husband, Tom, of Bar Harbor and Charlotte Drake of Belfast; brother, Edward Paine and wife, Patricia, of Bar Harbor; grandchildren, Melissa Tracy and husband, Steve, Robin Sue Tapley and husband, Wyman, Lindsey Doyle and husband, Frank and Devon Drake; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Tracy and Bodie Tapley. Theresa was predeceased by her life partner of 28 years, Frank “Bud” Higgins; sister, Charlotte Jackson and granddaughter Michelle Mills.
