SOUTHEWEST HARBOR — Dr. Michael “Mike” Anthony Vietti of Southwest Harbor passed away in his sleep at home on Dec. 7, 2010. He was born on March 27, 1941 to the late Michael Vietti and Minnie (Banke) Vietti Kazmierski in Pittsburg, Kansas. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Pittsburg, a member of the Class of 1959. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physics from Kansas State University (now Pittsburg State University), then his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Missouri-Rolla.
He was an associate professor of physics at the University of Maine-Orono for 16 years, then became vice president of engineering for Rainwise, Inc. in Bar Harbor where her worked for the last 23 years.
He is survived by his wife, Celia Kay Somers Vietti of Southwest Harbor; daughters Suzette Vietti Cowan and her husband Chris of Derry, N.H. and Marie Vietti of Boston, Mass.; four sons, Justin Vietti, Mario Vietti and Anthony Vietti, all of Southwest Harbor, and Dominic Vietti of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandsons, Chad, Kevin and Nickolas Cowan, all of Derry, N.H.; three brothers, Anthony Vietti and his wife Joyce of Pittsburg, Kansas, Raymond Vietti and his wife Jackie of El Dorado, Kansas and Tom Kazmierski of Joplin, Mo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by a close family friend, Barbara Csavinszky, of Old Town, and his beloved family pets, especially Ollie.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church in Ellsworth, with Father Scott Mower as celebrant on Dec. 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. Interment arrangements in the spring are pending family review. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
