Mary (Thomas) Perkins

WATERFORD, CONN.—Mary (Thomas) Perkins, 74, of 276 Niantic River Road, Waterford, Conn., and formerly of Sullivan, passed away peacefully Nov. 22, 2009, at home.

She was the beloved wife of Elias Perkins. Mary was born Sept. 26, 1935, in Sullivan, daughter of the late Robert and Laura (Wright) Thomas.


Mary was a devoted, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She graduated from Sumner Memorial High School in 1955. She was a member of Eastern Star. She touched many lives in her many years of child care, especially that of Carolyn Haynes. She also enjoyed her 11 years with Hallmark Cards and all the friends she made while traveling as a team leader.

Mary leaves behind her legacy of her loving, devoted husband of 38 years, Elias; four children, David Johnston, Dennis Johnston and wife, Lisa, all of Hancock; Mollie (Johnston) Higgins and her husband, Robert Higgins Jr., of Waterford; Patricia (Perkins) Crump of Waterford; seven grandchildren, Suzanne (Higgins) Brown and her husband, Jeramiah, Patrick Higgins, Paul Johnston and his wife, Alicia (Miller) Johnston, Christopher and Matthew Johnston, Nicholas and Paige Crump; four great-grandchildren, Michael, Katlyn and Phoebe Brown and Abbie Johnston; her two brothers, Harvey “Pete” Thomas and his wife, Mary (Workman) Thomas, of Sullivan and Ernest Thomas and his wife, Gladys (Steadman) Thomas, of Waterford.

A memorial service was held Nov. 24, 2009, in Flanders Baptist Church, East Lyme, Conn. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New London Cancer Center Guardian Fund with notation in Mary Perkins’ honor or to Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut. Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, New London, Conn., is handling arrangements.
