SEATTLE, WASH. — Mary Ruth Barbey Abbott, age 80, passed away Nov. 14, 2012, at Kline Galland Home, Seattle, Wash. Mary was born May 31, 1932, in Ellsworth, to Peter and Katherine (Austin) Barbey.
Her family relocated to Everett, Wash., in 1944. She was a proud 1955 University of Washington nursing school graduate. Her first job was in Bar Harbor, where she met her husband, William “Bud” Abbott. Bud and Mary made their home in Renton, Wash., where they raised their two children, Michael and Carolyn “Cozy.” For 30-plus years, Mary taught natural childbirth classes to countless couples in the Renton area. Mary was an accomplished cellist with the Highline Symphony, Bellevue Philharmonic, Bangor Symphony and the Tea House Trio. She was also an avid birder and kept an active life list of all her sightings. She was interested in politics and enthusiastically supported issues of gay rights and equality.
Mary was predeceased by husband, Bud; and brother, Robert Barbey. She is survived by her children, Michael W. Abbott, and his wife, Melissa; her daughter, Carolyn R. Abbott and her wife, Kelly L. Ross.
