Mary Helen Smith, 79, died March 17, 2009, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born Sept. 18, 1929, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Clifford A. and Lucy B. (Bunker) Stillwell.
Mary was an avid reader. One of her many passions was helping children learn to read and appreciate books. Her entire family, to the youngest great-grandchild, now shares her love of books. Mary also enjoyed the game of beano. Not so much the game itself (though she did enjoy winning on occasion) but the companionship she found there. She met many friends at beano including her dear friend, Anna, and these connections brought her great joy.
She is survived by her sons, George “Skip” Smith and his wife, Carol, John Smith,; daughter, Helen Tracey, all of Lamoine; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Warren Stillwell of Massachusetts. She was predeceased by brothers, Clifford and Robert Stillwell.
At Mary’s request, there will be no services. Contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to Mary Dow Center for Cancer Care, 50 Union St., Ellsworth, ME 04605. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Condolences may be expressed at www.jordanfernald.com.
