HANCOCK – Marion Dow, 93, born Oct. 26, 1923, the daughter of Harry and Teresa Small of Harrington, died Jan. 20, 2017, after a long battle with cancer while at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. Marion grew up in Harrington and lived there until she moved to Ellsworth in the late 1960s. She was a devoted member of the United Baptist Church in Ellsworth for many years. She was awarded the Boston Post Cane in 2016 by the town of Hancock. Marion worked many years in the Ellsworth area, working at the mill, department stores, selling Avon and working at Dunkin’ Donuts. She made friends wherever she was and remembered them throughout the years. She received great pleasure in giving to as many charities and religious organizations as possible. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Marion was predeceased by her brother Lloyd Small and his wife, Marjorie (Foss) Small, brother Stanley Small and his wife, Betty (Millet) Small, ex-husbands Clayton Grant and Clarence Down, two sons, Paul Grant and Phillip Grant, and son-in-law Phillip Lane.
Marion is survived by her three children, Patricia (Grant) Birch and husband, Mark, of Westford, Mass., Douglas Grant and wife, Elaine (Couture). of North Berwick, and June (Dow) Lane of Copperas Cove, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Mark, Peter, Kristen, Betsy, Alex, Nicole, Sara, Karen, Kenneth, Christopher, Laura and Ashley; 25 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Seaport Village Healthcare staff for their excellent care of Marion over the last several months. A special thank you to Friends in Action in for helping her for the last few years.
