HANCOCK — Madalene L. Nowell died Feb. 10, 2013, at Golden Acres, Hancock. She was born May 29, 1915, in North Penobscot, to Winfield Homer Lowell and Retta (Wilson) Lowell.
Madalene graduated from North Penobscot Grammar School and Ellsworth High School, Class of 1933, where she was valedictorian. She also graduated from Bangor Maine School of Commerce (Husson); and after graduating, she worked for a CPA in Bangor. She married Everett M. Nowell of Bangor in 1939. They moved to Holden where she was active in the Holden Congregational Church, the Grange and other community activities. She began a love of the coast of Maine in 1949 after purchasing a cottage in Marlboro. In 1969, she became a year-round resident of Marlboro. In 1977, she moved to Brooksville, Fla., and enjoyed 21 years of retirement life until Everett died in 1998. Following Everett’s death, she moved back to the Holden area, where she lived until her recent move to Golden Acres.
Survivors include her daughter, Joyce-Hayden Adams and her husband, George, of Dedham and Brooksville, Fla.; her son, Clayton Everett Nowell and his wife, Marcia, of Hancock; granddaughters, Cindy Goss and her husband, Kevin, of Holden, Dianne Whitcomb and her husband, Billy, of Bangor; grandson, Christopher Clayton Nowell and his wife, Melissa, of Hancock; great-grandson, Heath Goss and his wife, Celena, of New York; great-granddaughter, Scotti Goss of Massachusetts; great-grandsons, Mickey and Cole Nowell of Hancock. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Everett; grandson, Scott Adams; and brothers, Fred and Russell Lowell.
A celebration of Madalene’s life will be held 11 a.m. May 29, 2013, at Holden Congregational Church, followed by a “party” at the home of her daughter on Moulton Pond, Dedham.
