Luther Marshall Piper Jr.

BLUE HILL and DEER ISLE — Luther Marshall Piper Jr., born Oct. 19, 1934, died Oct. 1, 2012, in Blue Hill, the first day of duck hunting season. Luther was born and raised in the village of Blue Hill to Sylvia Marshall and Luther Monroe Piper, first living in the Pendleton Building and then the Holt House.

He married Barbara Faye Putney in 1960 in the parlor of the Holt House, and they raised three children on Green’s Hill, Kevin Joel, Brenda Lee and Karen Ann. Luther graduated from George Stevens Academy in 1952, attended UMO and entered the Army. He then worked as a plumber for Babson & Duffy for many years. He was a member of the Blue Hill Rifle and Pistol Club, working for years at their annual shoot. He was also a member of the Blue Hill Volunteer Fire Department and devoted many hours to training and fighting fires for Blue Hill. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 85. Luther looked forward to deer hunting season and especially the weeklong hunt with his friends, Walter Butler, Don Bisset, Donny Clark, Dick Osgood, Fern Robertson and Bill Ricker, on Toddy Pond at the Butler Camp. He enjoyed taking his family striped bass fishing on the Union River, mackerel fishing off of the South Blue Hill wharf, trout fishing on Patten Pond and clamming on Long Island. He and his family grew a large garden every year at their camp on the Grindleville Road with enough vegetables to put up for winter. He loved snowmobiling and he loved being outside in nature and spending time with his family and friends. He will be truly missed.

Luther is survived by his children and their families, Kevin Piper, Brenda Piper Horton, and her children, Tabor Alexander Horton and Christopher Gregory Smith, and Karen Piper Martin, her husband, William “Toby” and her children, William Bradley and Samuel Adam. He is also survived by his second wife, Rosemary Torrey Piper, and her children, Linda Torrey Hodgkins, Theresa Torrey and Russell Torrey and their families. Her oldest daughter, Nancy Torrey Gale, died earlier this year. He is also survived by numerous cousins, including Chandler and Sue Duffy, Sarah Crockett, Hattie Piper, Dan and Rocky Piper, and Betty MacTaggart. Luther loved them all. Luther will also be sadly missed by his chocolate Lab, Sable; his cat, Whiplash, and the family dogs, North, Rocko, Bean, Mocha, Oakley, Fenway and Katy. They will miss the treats that were always awaiting them when they came to visit. The family wishes to thank the Island Nursing Home for their exceptional and compassionate care that he received while a resident.

It is believed that Luther, now that he is free of his pain-filled body, is partridge and seabird hunting with his dogs that predeceased him, preparing for deer hunting season with the deer camp gang, and enjoying spending time with all of the family and friends that he has so dearly missed. We think that they are having a really good time wherever they are.

There will be a graveside service 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at Seaside Cemetery, Blue Hill, with a reception following. For more information please call (207) 610-0512.
