Leon Alan Clark, fondly remembered as “Clarkie,” passed away on April 20, 2020, at Brewer Center for Health and Rehab. He was born on Sept. 30, 1927, in Machiasport, the son of Willie L. and Etta E. (Harmon) Clark. Leon attended Washington Academy, and after graduation he served in the U.S. Army. He then studied automotive technology at a trade school in Newton, Mass.
Upon his return to Maine, he worked as a mechanic for Knights Auto Sales in Bangor and then as a salesman for International Harvester. In 1964, he established Complete Tire Service located in Ellsworth, which he co-owned and managed until his retirement. Leon was a member of the Ellsworth Lions Club. While a member, he served as King Lion and as a director and chairman of several programs. He took great pride in the recruitment of new members each year. Leon was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship for dedicated humanitarian services to the Lions Clubs International Foundation. He was a devoted husband, father and Grampy. Leon was well known and liked throughout the community. Everywhere he went, people would make a point of stopping and talking with him. He loved to laugh, joke and share stories. He was an avid snowmobiler, Sea-Doo and ATV rider and gardener. He especially enjoyed feeding and watching the birds, summers he spent at his camp on Molasses Pond with his late wife, Maxine, his annual hunting and snowmobiling trips, and spending time with his family.
Leon is survived by his daughter, Susan C. Bedard and husband Peter of Ellsworth; grandchildren, Nicole Marie Bedard of Newburyport, Mass., and partner Ryan Serewicz and Evan Alan Marden Bedard and wife, Olivia, of Lamoine; a special friend and “son of his heart” James “Putt” Patten Jr. and his wife, Pam, of Trenton; neighbors Alice Upton and Charles “Buster” Harding; sisters-in-law Lorraine Pottle and Velma Hoyt; his Aunt Leona Roberts; and many cousins, nephews and nieces. Clark and wife, Lena, and brothers-in-law Cecil Pottle and Paul Hoyt.
