Joseph E. McCarthy Jr.

ELLSWORTH — Joseph E. McCarthy Jr., 79, lovingly called “Bud” by his family and friends, passed away Oct. 30, 2010. A longtime resident of Ellsworth, he was born April 28, 1931, in Bangor, the son of Joseph E. Sr. and Kathleen E. (Clukey) McCarthy.

Joe graduated in 1949 from John Bapst High School in Bangor. He served in the United States Air Force for four years during the Korean War. As a Maine state trooper from 1955 to 1975, Joe worked countless hours serving the citizens of southern and eastern Maine. He was a strong, fair and proud man who earned the trust and respect of all who came in contact with him. He retired in 1975 as a sergeant in the Maine State Police. He then served in Ellsworth as chief of police in 1975 through 1976. Joe enjoyed searching for a new and better way into a good trout brook with Stuart Taylor, his morning coffee and telling stories about the days on patrol with Ron Libby, having a cup of tea in his “spot” at Roice Saunders’ kitchen table, and teaching Rolla Uttley, the brother he never had, the proper way to fish. Joe especially enjoyed his time up to camp in Ashland with Charlie Sargent and his boys, hunting and perfecting his craft of fly fishing in pursuit of “Walter.”

He is survived by his wife and soul mate of 59 years, Elaine (Bunker) McCarthy of Ellsworth; sons, Michael and wife, Sheryl, of Charlotte, N.C., Timothy of Ellsworth; daughters, Karen Hamilton and husband, Philip, Anne Marie McCarthy, Lorri Fortier and husband, Jeff, all of Ellsworth. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Meghan Fitzgerald and husband, Corey, Evan McCarthy and wife, Katelyn, Molly and Shane McCarthy, Shannon Curtis and husband, Dan, Tara Hamilton, and Darci and Makenzie Fortier. He was blessed with six great-grandchildren. He also leaves sisters-in-law, Rita Comer, Barbara Boyden, Polly Uttley, Sheila Nash and Marilyn Dennison; and several nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his father and mother; and sisters, Patricia Schenning and Mary Ann Hathaway.

Calling hours will be held 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where an 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010.
