SURRY — Joanne Scamman Thompson died Nov. 23, 2013, at her home on Newbury Neck. She was born May 18, 1930, in Newton, Mass., the daughter of Dr. Clarence and Flora (Gradie) Scamman.
Joanne graduated from White Plains High School, White Plains, N.Y., and Brown University in 1951. She worked for New England Telephone as a service representative and then as personnel assistant at Ultrasonic Corp. While working in Boston, Joanne met her husband to be, R. Boyd Thompson, on a blind date. They married 90 days later, a marriage that lasted 56 years. Joanne and Boyd moved to Schenectady, N.Y., where they had their daughter, Tracy, followed by the birth of their son, Stephen, three years later. Joanne had summered since childhood at the Scamman family farm on Newbury Neck, and after residing many years in Connecticut they moved to the family farm permanently in 1989 after Boyd’s retirement. Joanne was a founding and ever lively member of the Newbury Neck First Friday Dinner Group, as well as president of the Friends of Ellsworth Public Library. She was an active member in her sewing group, regaling her friends with wonderful stories and anecdotes. With her great sense of humor, she kept the group in stitches. A compassionate dear friend, devoted mother, and loving wife, she will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joanne’s memory may be made to the Friends of the Ellsworth Public Library, 20 State St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.
