BAR HARBOR — JoAnne Olson, 82, of Swampscott, Mass., died Feb. 11, 2011 at the AVIV Centers for Living in Swampscott, after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Richard H. Olson. Born and raised in Bar Harbor, JoAnne was the daughter of the late Seth E. and Helen (Greeley) Libby. A graduate of Bar Harbor High School, JoAnne went on to earn her degree in education from the University of Maine where she was a member of the Alpha Omicron PI sorority.
JoAnne had taught home economics in both the Martha’s Vineyard and Melrose school systems before moving to Swampscott in 1952. JoAnne was an active member of the First Church in Swampscott for more than 50 years, serving on many committees as well as being the former chairman of the church rair. JoAnne also was responsible for starting the first church pre-school program there. She was a former driver for Meals-on-Wheels, was a past president of the Lynn Home for Young Women, and a member of the Tedesco Country Club. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, golf, swimming and spending time with her many grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Peter S. Olson and his wife Nancy of Swampscott, Susan O. Hamilton and her husband Bruce of Swampscott, Nancy O. Tamez and her husband Kevin of Mount Laurel, N.J., and Sarah O. de Melo of Swampscott; a brother Richard Libby, of Bar Harbor; a sister, Grace McKinlay and her husband Edwin of Barrington, R.I.; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Emerson Libby.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011 at the First Church in Swampscott, 40 Monument Ave., Swampscott, Mass. at 11 a.m.
