Joan Manning (Ransome) Dickson

ELLSWORTH — Joan Manning (Ransome) Dickson, 83, passed away peacefully Sept. 1, 2011. Born Jan. 13, 1928 in Chicago, Ill. the daughter of Arthur and Florence (Shreve) Ransome.

Joan graduated from Bethel High School, Bethel, Conn. Joan was involved in the civil rights movement and was a member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. She participated in several anti-war silent vigils and marches during the Vietnam War. Joan was great at planning birthdays for her children, holiday gatherings for her family and could cook a mean pot roast.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald E. Dickson. Joan is survived by her sister, Charlene Shepard; and by her daughters and sons-in-law, Victoria and Bryan Lodge of Ellsworth, Candice Hawkes and Jeff Smith of St. John, Virgin Islands; son, David and wife, Valerie Hawkes, of Memphis, Tenn.; her stepchildren, Kathy, Tom, Mark and Suzanne; her grandchildren, Sadie, Sarah, Rose, Matt and Michael; her great-grandchildren, Caden, Riley, Olivia, Logan and Emma;. nieces and nephews, Peter, David, Robin and Michael. The family wishes to thank Mountain Vista for their kindness and care, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and Dr. LaRocco for their gentleness.

A gathering of friends and family was held at Victoria and Bryan’s home on Sept. 3, 2011. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Glastonbury, Conn. The family suggests any memorial donations be made to Hospice of Hancock County, Ellsworth, ME.
