ELLSWORTH — Jay Richard Davis, son of Drs. Jane and Richard Davis, formerly of Westfield, N.J., passed away peacefully May 23, 2014, after a battle with pneumonia. He was the eldest child of Jane and Dick, dear brother to his siblings, and uncle to his nieces and nephew. He was born in White Plains, N.Y., and had lived in Ellsworth, for many years in a group home operated by Downeast Horizons.
Even though he was limited by his many disabilities, he brought joy and laughter to those around him. Throughout his life, he endured his disabilities with patience, strength and dignity. Jay taught his family, friends and caretakers to appreciate the multitude of gifts that life bestows upon us all, but which can easily be missed or taken for granted. Jay also taught us compassion and that the severely disabled are capable of deep determination and enduring love. Although he was confined to a wheelchair as he grew older, he loved the beach and swimming when he was a boy. He was a huge fan of “The Price Is Right” and loved his cat, Miss Pumpkin.
Jay is survived by his parents of Sorrento; his sisters, Ellen Stone and Sarah Harvey; and his brother, Christopher Davis.
A memorial service is planned for June 20 at 12:30 p.m. at the Downeast Horizons Center, Ellsworth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Downeast Horizons,77 Union St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.
