Jane Louise Smallidge

MOUNT DESERT — Jane Louise Smallidge, 83, passed away on April 7, 2011, at the home of her son Mark Smallidge and daughter-in-law Sarah Kohler after a long battle with cancer.

Jane was born on Aug. 25, 1927, the fourth of six children of H. Nathalie (Turner) and Robert Lindsay Smallidge of Northeast Harbor. Although she lived her entire adult life off-island, Jane always thought of Northeast Harbor as home and she maintained an active, lifelong interest in the art, history and genealogy of Mount Desert Island and the surrounding Islands.

A member of numerous historical, archaeological, and genealogical societies, Jane made broad use of the Internet, helping countless individuals in their personal family research.

Joining the U.S. Air Force in 1951, Jane served proudly during the Korean War, serving in Germany and England, and attending Oklahoma A&M University. Honorably discharged in 1955, Jane continued to work as a civil servant of the USAF, employed at Pease Air Force Base until her retirement in 1991. Jane was a resident of Dover, N.H. until shortly before her death.

She leaves her son Mark and daughter-in-law Sarah of New Salem, Mass.; and five grandchildren, Ras Leif Smallidge, Kelly Lillian Smallidge, Dustin Kohler Cheng, Rathana Kohler Thann, and Hannah Joy Kohler Smallidge; and her brother John Smallidge of East Lyme, Conn.

Jane was predeceased by her parents; and by her siblings Hugh, Dorcas, Nathan and Robert.

There will be a memorial graveside service with military honors at Northeast Harbor Cemetery on Saturday, June 25, 2011 beginning at 10 a.m.
