BAR HARBOR — Helen Mona Longton, 95, died Oct. 24, 2009 surrounded by her loving family at Mount Desert Island Hospital.
She was born Sept. 7, 1914 in Bar Harbor, the daughter of Clarence and Mona (Goss) Smith.
Helen graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1932. While a student there, she was a star basketball player. Her love of basketball lasted throughout her life, as she cheered on her favorite team, the Boston Celtics, to the very end. Helen had a great sense of humor and enjoyed her longstanding Thursday card group with her friends. In her younger years she worked in many of the local offices and was involved in her community. She was a lifelong member of St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor.
Helen is survived by three daughters, Jane L. Burch of Bar Harbor, Patti Walto and her husband Peter of Ava, N.Y., and Gale Abbott and her husband Tom of Bar Harbor; four grandchildren, Michelle Souza, Chris Joy, Kaitlen Griffin and Bodie Abbott; three great-grandchildren, Aidan and twins Derek and Dylan Joy. Helen loved her three brothers, Merrill, Donald and Kenneth Smith, and enjoyed a special relationship with Donald’s wife, her sister-in-law Joan, all of Bar Harbor. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband William H Longton; a sister, Elizabeth Johnson; a brother, Clarence “Caddy” Smith; and son-in-law, Arthur Burch. Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 at the Ledgelawn Cemetery in Bar Harbor with family friend Rev. Dr. Sandra Reed officiating.
