Gwen Elizabeth Schwartz

MOUNT DESERT — Gwen Elizabeth Schwartz died suddenly on Tuesday, April 5, in New York City.

Gwen was born April 18, 1989 in New York City, the daughter of Frank J. and Annie T. Tomolonius Schwartz. A gifted artist and sculptor, she was named a university honors scholar at New York University and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from NYU’s Steinhardt School in Manhattan in 2011.

Gwen was raised and educated on Mount Desert Island and graduated with honors from Mount Desert Island High School with the Class of 2007; and from Mount Desert Elementary School.

Gwen will be remembered fondly as a brilliant, sunny, beautiful, loving and passionate young woman. She loved to ride her bicycle with her dad on Acadia’s carriage roads and she loved to travel. She was a loving daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter, cousin, and friend to many on MDI, and in Massachusetts and New York City; to fellow students throughout the United States, and to the many friends she made on her travels to Italy, Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Korea.

Gwen is survived by her parents, Annie and Frank Schwartz of Seal Harbor; brother Ian Schwartz and his wife Kim Eun Ok of Busan, Korea; grandparents David M. and Jane Tomolonius of Eastham, Mass.; grandparents Albert and Betty Southwick of Leicester, Mass.; grandfather A. David Schwartz of West Nyack, N.Y.; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Gwen loved school and held her teachers and public school education on MDI in high regard. With that in mind, a memorial fund will be established to help ensure that the Mount Desert Elementary School will always have enough art supplies to satisfy dedicated young artists like Gwen. Please send contributions in lieu of flowers to the Gwen E. Schwartz Memorial Fund, c/o The First, P. O. Box 858 Northeast Harbor ME 04662.

Know when to pay your respects.
