Guilford F. Small

Guilford F. Small, 86, passed away peacefully March 6, 2009, at the Courtland Rehab & Living Center, Ellsworth, with his loved ones by his side. He was born April 22, 1922, in Ellsworth, the son of Bernard and Abagail Small of Penobscot.

Guilford was predeceased by his beloved first wife, Lillian Finnamore, of Waterville, whom he met and married in Portland while he was serving in the Coast Guard. After Guilford’s honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, he began to study the Bible, and in 1951 he and Lillian were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was married to Lillian for 36 years before her death in 1980. The last nine years of their marriage Guilford moved from Maine to California, so that his beloved Lillian could receive modern treatment for her kidneys failure. During those years. Guilford tenderly and faithfully cared for his ailing wife, even taking special medical classes to perform necessary duties of connecting her to the kidney dialysis machine he had installed in their California home in the late 1970s. All this while he held down a full-time job as an automobile mechanic/painter during the day. In 1978, he received word from Maine relatives that the Eastern Maine Medical Center had dialysis machines available. So, he sold everything and took Lillian back home to Maine to finish out her last two years of life amongst her family and loved ones. Guilford will always be remembered by his family and friends as a loving, devoted and self-sacrificing husband and father. Six years after his beloved wife’s death, he met and married in California, at the age of 64, his “love of his life,” Geraldine Shields, to whom he has been married 23 wonderful years as of this May 16 and who is known by all as “his bride” and the “sparkle in his one good eye.”

Guilford is survived by his daughter and son, Donna Small Quinn and husband, Roderick Quinn, of Bernard and David Andrew Small of San Rafael, Calif. Guilford leaves behind five grandchildren, Lincoln Quinn and wife, Melba, of California, Tanya Quinn Ramirez and husband, Juan, of California, Tamara Quinn Brinson and husband, Matthew, of Bernard, David Aaron Small of California, and Michael Small and wife, Kelsey, of San Rafael, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Malachi Ramirez, Kaitlyn Quinn and Micah and Jason Small. He is also survived by his sister, Harriet Small Muniz of Bucksport; and a younger brother, Charles Small and his wife, Carolyn, of New Hampshire. Guilford was predeceased by his older brother, Edward Small and wife, Alda, of Bucksport.

Guilford spent many years giving of himself to those he loved and in the ministry as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held in the spring at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Bar Harbor.
