George R. “Bob” Turner Sr.

George R. “Bob” Turner Sr., 90, died peacefully in his home on May 11, 2020. He was born Dec. 2, 1929, in Mount Desert, the son of Elmo P. Turner and Betsey U. (Myrick) Turner.

George retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Feb. 13, 1969, after serving in many different capacities. One of his more notable responsibilities, while serving as commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat Point Hannon, stationed in Jonesport, was supporting a security detail for President John F. Kennedy and the First Lady when they sailed off the coast of Massachusetts.

After retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard, George worked aboard commercial fishing vessels for a time and then began working as a long-haul truck driver between Florida and Newfoundland, Canada, working in that capacity for many years.

George is survived by his sons, George Turner Jr. and David Turner, and by his sister, Charlotte (Turner) King of Gardiner.

At George’s request, there will be no services.
