ELLSWORTH – George E. Tassara, 78, of Ellsworth, peacefully passed away at home on July 12 after a courageous five-year battle with lung cancer.
He was born Nov. 21, 1937, in New Orleans, La., the son of Rudolph and Beulah (Cheramie) Tassara. At 17, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts, where he met his wife, Betty.
After discharge from the service, he was employed as a production supervisor in New Bedford, Mass., for many years. In 1996, George and Betty sold their home in East Freetown, Mass., and bravely set out for Bar Harbor, where they bought and successfully operated the Llangolan Inn and Cottages for 10 years. Upon retirement, they moved into a new home in Ellsworth and joined the First Congregational Church, becoming active members.
George served as a member of the Board of Trustees and all-around handyman for the church. George was a devoted husband and father, always supportive and interested in his children’s activities. He loved jazz and big band music. Throughout his life he enjoyed many live concerts of famous musicians, many times taking his teenage children and their friends to these concerts. George loved to travel, visiting 43 states, and especially enjoyed the national parks.
George is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty (Elizabeth Lovenbury) Tassara; a son, George Tassara Jr. of Albuquerque, NM.; two daughters, Aldonna Girouard and her husband Keith Girouard of Housatonic, Mass.; Pamela Tassara and her husband John Powell, Ph.D., of Arlington, Mass.; sister Christina Mascarella and her husband, Sidney, of Baton Rouge, La.; four grandchildren: Ian and Mariah Girouard; Benjamin and Adam Powell; several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law Irene Ashley and her husband, Mark. He was predeceased by his sister Esta Tassara.
A memorial service will be held at First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, 2 Church St., on Friday, July 22, at 11 a.m. There will be no calling hours.
