Ernest R. Messer

Ernest “Ernie” R. Messer, 74, passed away May 14, 2009, in his favorite reclining chair while watching television in the family home of 40 years. He was born Oct. 2, 1934, in Portland, the son of Alvin M. and Virginia (Greene) Messer.

In his youth, the family moved to Bangor, where he graduated from Bangor High School. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking, particularly the Chimney in Baxter State Park. Ernie was fondly known in the Ellsworth-Mount Desert Island area as the “potato chip man” after working for King Cole, Bachman and Frito-Lay. He shared his love of music by singing at his church, Ellsworth Community of Christ and at weddings, funerals and in community theater. His life centered on his family, his church community and he volunteered as a driver for Faith in Action, where he was recently honored as Volunteer of the Year. He was a great man and like the greatest of men, he was humble and always willing to help others in need.

He is survived by his son, Mark E. Messer of Ellsworth; daughter. Jill Abbott of Great Pond; grandchildren, Emily Sikorski and husband, Tony, of Pennsylvania, Justin Carter of Westbrook, Brandy Abbott and fiance, Corey Smith, of Buxton, Tiffany Abbott of Great Pond and Sarah Abbott of Orland; great-grandchildren, Eliana Murphy, Mackenzie and Riley Sikorski; sister, Elaine Brunkhardt and husband, Ron, of Colorado; and numerous other family members. He was predeceased by his parents; and a daughter, Karen Lynn Carter.

A funeral service was held May 18, 2009, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Contributions in Ernie’s memory may be made to Community of Christ, P.O. Box 996, Ellsworth, ME 04605 or to the charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be expressed at
