Edwin “Ed” Blair Rogers

ELLSWORTH—Edwin “Ed” Blair Rogers, 71, passed away Sept. 18, 2009, at a Bangor hospital after a brave battle with colon cancer for over three years. He was born Feb. 9, 1938, in Brattleboro, Vt., the son of Carl and Alice “Jackie” (Maynard) Rogers.

 

The family moved to Ellsworth in 1944, where he attended elementary school and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1957. He played basketball, football and track and was in the band. In 1961, he graduated from the University of Maine in Orono. He worked in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire as assistant manager and manager of J.J. Newbury’s, W. T. Grant and Radio Shack stores, returning to Ellsworth as an owner of Radio Shack for 17 years. In 1976, he received the Sales & Marketing Executives International Award from Radio Shack. Later he owned Uniglobe Travel in Ellsworth, worked at Brown’s Appliance, and drove for Downeast Transportation. He was a member of Lygonia Lodge No. 40 AF & AM, Past High Priest of Acadia Chapter No. 31 RAM; Past Commander of Blanquefort Commandery No. 13 of Ellsworth; The Scottish Rites and past captain of the Anah Shrine Flag Unit of Bangor which he greatly enjoyed. He was awarded the Knights Templar Cross of Honor by the Grand Commandery of Maine. He especially enjoyed his summers at camp on George’s Pond in Franklin where his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews came to visit. Numerous Falmouth children also enjoyed coming to camp.

He is survived by his father, Carl Rogers of Ellsworth Falls; his wife of 51 years, Rae (Wilbur) Rogers of Ellsworth; two sons, Clifford Rogers of Ellsworth and Kenneth Rogers and his wife, Deborah, of Solon, Ohio; one daughter, Karen Proctor and her husband, Rick, of Falmouth; five grandchildren, Jacob and Adam Rogers of Solon, Ohio, Courtney, Andrew and Caroline Proctor of Falmouth; a cousin, Clifford DuBreuil of Alfred, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Patsy Jordan and her husband, Marshall, of Waltham, Juanita Calfa and her husband, Salvatore, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Edward Weirick of East Orland. He was predeceased by his mother, Alice “Jackie” Rogers; an infant brother; and a cousin, Betty Lehmann.

Family and friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with a Masonic service held at 7 p.m. A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at Jordan-Fernald.
